Wannacry hero arrested for malware attack | Bangkok Post: news

(AP file photo)SAN FRANCISCO - A cyber security researcher widely credited with helping to neutralise the global "WannaCry" ransomware attack earlier this year has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and charged with a separate malware attack. He was arrested and charged with creating and enabling a separate attack, the Kronos malware targeting banks. The Kronos malware was spread through emails with malicious attachments such as compromised Microsoft word documents, and hijacks credentials like internet banking passwords to let its user steal money with ease. “Defendant Marcus Hutchins created the Kronos malware,” the indictment, filed on behalf of the eastern district court of Wisconsin, alleges. His boss at UK-based cybersecurity company Fidus Information Security, Andrew Mabbitt, said Hutchins was currently at the FBI field office in Las Vegas.
